envy

Who do you envy?

Oh, envy…

I’m an Enneagram 4. Envy is my “deadly sin”.

As Brené Brown writes in Atlas of the Heart, “Envy occurs when we want something that another has”. She continues: it “typically involves two people and occurs when one lacks somethng enjoyed by another”.

Meanwhile scripture teaches me to “let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” (James 1:4). Well…let’s just say I’m working on it.

I envy those who seem to have clear purpose and direction in their life. Who know what they want and know how to get it. Those who are at ease in this world, who do not seem to struggle. Those who “have struggled” – in the past sense. Honestly, the list is pretty exhaustive. But I will, now, turn my mind to steadfastness…and my head to the pillow.
